This article explains the current rules and requirements for sending an international transfer to South Africa through Neema, including sending to a bank account and sending for cash pickup.

Depending on the transfer being sent via Ria (Sikhona) or MamaMoney, please complete registration in one of the services if you send money to a recipient for the first time.

Important notes and restrictions

  • As part of the South African Reserve Bank regulations, the beneficiary must register and complete the KYC (Know Your Customer) procedure for the first transaction. This registration is valid for one year.

  • Make sure you provide a valid phone number or email address so your receiver can be reached.

  • If the receiver does not complete the registration, the transaction will remain in Pending or Arrived status.

Sending to bank accounts

Ria (Sikhona)

  • Required information of the beneficiary:

    • Valid mobile phone number or email address.

    • Beneficiary bank account details.

  • First-time receiver steps:

    1. The beneficiary receives an email and/or SMS containing instructions and a registration link.

    2. The beneficiary completes the KYC procedure and registers as required by the South African Reserve Bank.

    3. Our payout partner contacts the beneficiary to assist them with the registration process.

  • Fee: The fee is 1%.

  • Transaction limit:

    • Limits are based on the Inbound Limit Tier Matrix (as of May 30th, 2023):

      • Silver Tier:

        • Daily: Up to R5,000

        • Monthly: Up to R25,000

        • Requirements:

          • SA ID: N/A

          • Foreign Passport (Default Tier): Valid Foreign Passport, Selfie

          • Asylum Document: Valid Asylum Document, Selfie

          • Under 18's (Default Tier): Minor Birth Certificate, Minor Bank Verification Document, Declaration completed by parent/legal guardian, Parent/legal guardian identification, Selfie of parent/legal guardian

      • Gold Tier:

        • Daily: Up to R75,000

        • Monthly: Up to R100,000

        • Requirements:

          • SA ID (Default Tier): SA ID, Selfie

          • Foreign Passport: Valid Foreign Passport, Valid Permit, Selfie

          • Asylum Document (Default Tier): Valid Asylum Document, Selfie

          • Under 18's: N/A

      • Platinum Tier:

        • Daily: Up to R200,000

        • Monthly: Up to R200,000

        • Requirements:

          • SA ID: SA ID, Selfie

          • Foreign Passport: Valid Foreign Passport, Proof of address in SA, Valid Permit, Selfie

          • Asylum Document: Valid Asylum Document, Proof of address in SA, Selfie

          • Under 18's: N/A

  • Transfer time: Processed in up to 2 hours (after registration is completed).

  • Transaction currency: ZAR.

  • Other restrictions for sending: If the receiver has not completed registration, the transaction remains in Pending or Arrived state.

  • Additional information:

MamaMoney

  • Required information of the beneficiary:

    • South African bank account details.

    • South African phone number.

  • First-time receiver steps:

    1. Download the MamaMoney App.

    2. Sign up with South African phone number and South African ID/Passport/Asylum document.

  • Transaction limit: Subject to standard partner limits.

  • Transfer time: Usually reflects same day or next business day.

  • Transaction currency: ZAR.

  • Other restrictions for sending: Service requires registration for receiving money for the first time

  • Additional information: Receiver receives an SMS from MamaMoney containing amount received and reference number once money is sent.

Sending for cash pickup

MamaMoney Cash Pickup

  • Required information of the beneficiary:

    • Valid ID/Passport.

    • Reference number received via SMS.

  • First-time receiver steps:

    1. Download the MamaMoney App.

    2. Sign up using a South African phone number and South African ID/Passport/Asylum document.

  • Transaction limit: Subject to standard partner limits.

  • Transfer time: Immediate once SMS with reference number is received.

  • Transaction currency: ZAR

  • Other restrictions for sending: Customer must present valid ID/Passport and Reference number at cash pickup location

  • Cash collection locations:

    • Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer, Selected SPAR.

  • Additional information:

    • Receiver receives an SMS from MamaMoney with amount received, reference number, and collection location details.
